Before ever driving a car, Charles Anderson, owner and president of Charles Anderson Lawn Care Service, was driving a lawn mower and making money.
Charles Anderson Lawn Care Service was the proud recipient of the Chamber Business of the Year Award at Tuesday night’s Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and awards banquet held at the World of Sports.
“As they were reading the bio I was thinking to myself, that sounds like what I did. I had no idea they were talking about me,” said Anderson.
He explained that receiving the award was an overwhelming experience but also an honor.
Anderson has been in the lawn care business since 1980 when he worked part-time before going full-time in 1994.
“I started this business from scratch…my mother would carry me somewhere to mow the yard, leave me, come back and pick me up and take me to the next job. She’d run the weed eater, and for the longest time she was my only employee. She always told me, do it right…do it like you would do your own place,” said Anderson.
Once he was able to drive, he got a trailer and lawn mower and continued. Although after graduation he worked at Presto from 1983 until 1994, the landscaping business is what Anderson really enjoyed.
“It’s what I’ve always wanted to do, and it’s what I enjoy doing,” he added.
Anderson said winning the award Tuesday night shed some light on what his business does and what they do for the county.
“Our staff is very professional,” said Anderson.
When speaking to Anderson Wednesday afternoon, he hadn’t had a chance to speak with his staff, but he said he planned to meet with his entire staff that evening to discuss the award and to let them know “it’s not because of me, it’s because of all of us.”
Anderson has received numerous phone calls and texts from friends and family members who are all very excited about the company winning the award.
Anderson has two sons, Bruce and Kyle, and Bruce is the operations manager for the company.
“He came to work for me full-time in 2005. He had actually gone to community college for criminal justice, but the business was growing so fast, and it’s his livelihood just as much as it is mine, and this will be all his one day. He’s taking classes now and continuing his education. He was real happy about the award,” said Anderson.
Anderson said he doesn’t enjoy sitting behind the desk. His favorite part of the job is getting out and talking to people and building relationships.
“I see our clients as friends, and I build relationships with them all,” he added.
Anderson built his company going to one yard to another mowing lawns. Now he owns the title “Halifax County Chamber Business of the Year.”
Chamber President Nancy Pool commented on this year’s business pick saying, “I think they are most deserving individuals. They are good leaders and lead by examples through their employees and were excellent choices.”
