Former Gazette-Virginian staff writer, columnist dies

Retired Gazette-Virginian staff writer and columnist Samuel L. “Sonny” Riddle Jr. died Wednesday morning at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was 62.

A retired school teacher, Riddle taught business and marketing classes at Halifax County High School where he also served as a Distributive Education (DECA) advisor to numerous students.

Upon his retirement from the school system, he became well-known in the community as a radio personality with WHLF 95.3 and later as a staff writer and columnist for The Gazette-Virginian.

He eagerly shared his fervent love for his college alma mater – Virginia Tech – with all his friends, and he was often noted for his wellspring of movie and television trivia knowledge.

A true family man, Riddle is survived by his wife of many years, Brenda; two children, Chip and Sarah, and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Black Walnut Baptist Church Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home.
