On tap: Virginia ABC stores will open on Sundays

ABC stores will open on Sundays starting July 1.

The local ABC store, located in Halifax Square, will be included, according to an ABC store spokesman.

Signs on the door, going and coming, tell customers that beginning Sunday, July 1, the ABC store will open at 1 p.m. on Sundays and remain open until 6 p.m.

This year the General Assembly passed new legislation, HB 896 introduced by Delegate David Albo, R-Fairfax, allowing all ABC stores to sell alcohol on Sundays as of July. That legislation removed population restrictions that had been in place only allowing ABC stores in Portsmouth, Hampton Roads, Newport News and Richmond, or cities with populations of 100,000 or more to open on Sundays.

Local Senators Frank Ruff Jr. and Bill Stanley, along with Delegate James Edmunds II, all opposed the legislation.

A spokesman for the store said Sunday openings are not expected to result in additional hirings at the local ABC store.
