Heavy rains swell Dan River; flood warning issued for Halifax

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued a flood warning for Halifax County on Sunday due to the heavy rains the county saw over the weekend.

The Roanoke and Dan River Basins saw two to five inches fall since Friday causing minor flooding and more is expected to occur. 


The Dan River affects South Boston with water run off from the rivers expected to rise until Tuesday morning. Superintendent of the South Boston Waste Water Plant Randy Cage said South Boston got 1.71 inches of rain between Friday night and Sunday. 

According to the National Weather Service at 11 a.m. Sunday the flood stage in South Boston was at 20 feet but will rise to near 23 feet by after midnight Sunday before falling back below flood stage Tuesday morning. 

At 25 feet the Riverdale business district begins to flood.
