Report of fire evacuates ABB employees in South Boston

No estimate of damages was available Thursday following a minor fire that occurred Wednesday at 6:21 p.m. at ABB on Philpott Road in South Boston.

South Boston Police Chief Steve Phillips said the fire, which was believed to have occurred in a duct that ran from the paint area up through the roof, was out when 15 firefighters from South Boston Fire Department and six from Turbeville Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene.

ABB employees did evacuate the building and remained outside for approximately 30 minutes while firefighters investigated the report of possible smoke inside the building.

According to Phillips, the fire was extinguished by a sprinkler system in the duct work.

South Boston firefighters responded with three tucks including the ladder truck and stayed on the scene about 30 minutes, Phillips said.

“When we left, ABB’s maintenance people were working on it, and the employees were going back into the building,” he added. “It turned out to be no major big deal.”

Damages were minimal, reported Phillips.
