Halifax youth showcase cows, goats, sheep

Halifax County High School student Ellen Crowder showed the Grand Champion steer at Monday’s 54th Annual Halifax County Livestock Show and Sale.

Youth from across Halifax County showed lambs, goats and cattle in seven different categories, including light and heavy market lambs, light and heavy market goats, heavy and light steers and heifers.

A large crowd was on hand to support the youth, despite cold, windy and rainy conditions at Halifax County Fairgrounds.

Bill Saunders took home the Earl Midkiff Memorial Award for winning the Alumni Cattle Show at Monday’s livestock show.  The award is named for long-time livestock show and sale supporter Earl Midkiff.

Crowder was awarded first-place in the classification of 
heavy steers, with Eddie Chaney awarded second-place, Casey Garland third-place, Lauren Chaney fourth-place and Kent Reese fifth- and sixth-places.

Crowder showed the Grand Champion steer, and Chaney showed the Reserve Champion steer.

Brittany Roller showed the Grand Champion heifer, and David Roller showed the Reserve Champion heifer, with Leigh-Anne McCormick showing the third-place heifer, Thomas Satterfield showing the fourth-place heifer and Michael Satterfield showing the fifth-place heifer.

Courtney Garland was awarded first-place in the classification of light steers, with Berkley Conner awarded second-place, West Conner third-place, Rebecca McCormick fourth-place, Blake Anderson fifth-place, Thomas Satterfield sixth-place and Rebecca McCormick seventh-place.

Camey Reese was awarded first-place and second-place in the classification of heavy market lambs, with West Conner awarded third-place and Courtney O’Shea awarded fourth-place.

Malory Fisher was awarded first-place in the classification of light market lambs, with Emory Conner awarded second-place, Libby Fisher third-place and Sara Beth Reese awarded fourth- and fifth-place.

Camey Reese showed both the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion market lambs.

Sabrina Covington was awarded first-place in the category of heavy market goats, with Sara Beth Reese awarded second-place and Ashley Jones third-place.

Caleb Shook was awarded first-place in the category of light market goats, with Samantha Vassar awarded second-place and Carleigh Shook awarded third-place.

Sabrina Covington showed the Grand Champion goat, and Sara Beth Reese showed the Reserve Champion goat.

Junior cattle showmanship winners (first through fourth place) included Casey Garland, West Conner, Leigh-Anne McCormick and Michael Satterfield.

Intermediate cattle showmanship winners (first through sixth-place) included Lauren Chaney, Brittany Roller, Rebecca McCormick, David Roller, Blake Anderson and Thomas Satterfield.

Senior cattle showmanship winners (first through sixth-place) included Berkley Conner, Eddie Chaney, Ellen Crowder, Courtney Garland, Kent Reese and Thomas Bryant.

Junior goat showmanship winners (first through fifth-place) included Caleb Shook, Ashley Jones, Carleigh Shook, Sabrina Covington and Samantha Vassar.

Senior goat showmanship winners (first through fifth-place) included Lydia Ferguson, Sara Beth Reese, Thomas Satterfield, Daniel Woosley and Michael Satterfield.

Junior lamb showmanship winners (first through fourth-place) included Malory Fisher, West Conner, Sarah Gognon and Emory Conner.

Senior lamb showmanship winners (first through third-place) included Camey Reese, Courtney O’Shea and Libby Fisher.
