Officials investigate cause of Tuesday fire in South Boston

A Tuesday fire caused $10,000 in damages and temporarily displaced a family of four, according to South Boston Fire Chief Steve Phillips.

South Boston Firefighters responded the home of Dorothy Burrell located on at 1718 Grace Ave. at 5:46 p.m. with 15 firefighters and three trucks. They were assisted by the Halifax Volunteer Fire Department with two trucks and 12 firefighters.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 8:02 p.m. dousing the flames with up to 500 gallons of water.

Phillips said the fire started underneath the house in a crawl space that was being used for storage.

The house was valued at $60,000 and cause is unknown. South Boston Police Sgt. Randy Redd is investigating the fire further.
