Accidental acceleration blamed in Monday crash

An 80-year-old South Boston man was trying to park at the Jiffy Store on Wilborn Avenue in South Boston Monday afternoon when he drove through the front window of the building.

According to an accident report filed by Sgt. R. D. Edmonds, James J. Squire hit the gas pedal and accelerated instead of braking, and the 2006 Ford Ranger he was driving ran through the front plate glass window of the Jiffy Store shortly after 3:30 p.m. Monday.

No one was hurt in the wreck, and no charges were filed.

Damages to the Ford Ranger were estimated at $1,500, and damage to the Southside Food Jiffy Store was estimated at $25,000, according to the report.
