Virgilina Summerfest tradition a rite of summer

Members of the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Association are fired up and getting prepared for the 32nd annual Summerfest set for Saturday in downtown Virgilina. 

The festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. with a parade down Florence Avenue. 

Festivities will continue throughout the day until 9 p.m.

Summerfest goers with a large appetite can look forward to barbecue sandwiches, stew, hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries and barbecue pork and chicken plates along with other treats which will be available for purchase until 2 p.m.

Games and rides will be available for the children, and arts and crafts booths also will be onsite Saturday.

From 12:30 to 5 p.m.  Summerfest goers will be entertained by the sounds provided by local music groups.

Centra Health and Life Flight helicopters will be on site for viewing.

The fire association will hold a raffle drawing at 9 p.m. with a first place prize of $1,000 cash, while the second place prize will be a guitar.

They also will raffle off a split nine-patch quilt donated by Elizabeth Smith.

From 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Summerfest goers can put on their dancing shoes and enjoy street dancing to the melodies of the Konnection Band co-sponsored by Southside Mechanical, Inc., Ellixson and Son Construction, B&D Farms and Virgilina Enterprises, Inc.

Summerfest goers are reminded to bring chairs.
