As in years past, the community will have two opportunities this holiday weekend to pay homage and remember veterans who have served their country.
On this Memorial Day weekend, Memorial Day tributes will be held on Sunday and Monday at the Halifax County War Memorial located on North Main Street in Halifax.
The Rev. Russell Lee, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in South Boston, will be the guest speaker for the Halifax County Memorial Day Service on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The program, sponsored by the Halifax County Veterans Association, will honor and pay tribute to all veterans who have served their nation.
Chairperson Frank Carr invites the public to attend this memorial salute to the nation’s veterans.
Special tribute will be paid to all the World War II veterans who served seven decades ago.
For more information, call Carr at 476-6554.
Brigadier General Don Broome, United States Army, retired, and president of Hargrave Military Academy, will be the featured speaker at the annual Memorial Day Service to be held Monday at 11 a.m.
Saved By Grace will render special music, and the names of four Halifax County soldiers who died in time of war will be unveiled at the War Memorial, organizers said.
Organized by John M. Jordan Camp #581, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Monday Memorial Day service will feature the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 8, and the Boy Scouts of America Troop #497 will present the colors.
Multiple veterans and heritage organizations will participate in the event, and the highlight of Monday’s service will be a wreath laying ceremony in front of the War Memorial.
The public is invited to attend and bring their own chairs.
