Halifax County High School student Rebecca McCormick showed the Grand Champion Market Steer at Saturday’s 56th Annual Halifax County Livestock Show and Sale.
In the past the livestock show had been held around the third Monday of April, but this year it was moved in hopes of having more people attend and in hopes of nicer weather, according to Show Manager Leah Brown.
A large crowd attended the event that kicked off at 10 a.m. and an auction sale was held at 7 p.m.
A total of 28 participants from grades K-12 showed a combination of 12 market steers, five replacement heifers, four market goats, seven replacement Dow goats, and five market lambs.
McCormick showed the Grand Champion Steer and Holden Francis showed the Reserve Champion steer.
Ellen Crowder was awarded first place in overall cattle showmanship, with David Roller awarded second-place, and Emory Conner was awarded third-place.
Conner also showed the Grand Champion heifer, and Roller showed the Reserve Champion heifer.
Samantha Vassar showed the Grand Champion goat while Brittany Roller showed the Reserve Champion goat, and third place winner was Michael Satterfield.
Kendall Crowder showed the Grand Champion Market Lamb and Kaitlynn Love showed the Reserve Champion Market Lamb.
Lydia Ferguson showed the Grand Champion Replacement doe goat and Sabrina Covington showed the Reserve Champion Replacement doe goat.
Sponsors for the 2014 show included Farm Bureau Virginia, McDannald Construction, Inc., Farm Credit, Abbott Farm Suppliers, Inc., Halifax County Veterinary Center, PC and Huber Engineered Woods.
