A 56-year-old Nathalie man was killed and his female passenger injured in a single vehicle wreck that occurred in the South Boston Wal-Mart parking lot close to the front of the store, adjacent to the grocery store entrance Friday afternoon.
According to South Boston Police Chief Jim Binner, Clifton Russell was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the 2002 Mazda when it came through the parking lot at a high rate of speed, struck two parked cars, then struck one of the yellow sign posts, flipped over onto its side and overturned.
The female passenger, 54-year-old Nathalie resident Brenda Russell was wearing a seatbelt and was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital for her injuries.
Senior Patrol Officer C. M. Mann, the investigating officer for the wreck, declared the Mazda a total lost and estimated damage to both of the park cars, a 2004 Ford and 2000 Ford, at $2,500.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the wreck.
