Driver airlifted to Duke following Friday wreck

A two-vehicle wreck late Friday morning in the 6000 block of Bethel Road resulted in the driver of one of the vehicles involved being airlifted to Duke University Medical Center.

Virginia State Trooper G. K. Brandes said the wreck occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. when a 1988 Toyota Camry driven by 70-year-old Margie Logan of Scottsburg crossed the centerline of the highway and struck head-on a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by 62-year-old Ann Tatum of Scottsburg.

Logan was airlifted to Duke University Medical Center to be treated for her injuries, while Tatum and a passenger in her vehicle, 71-year-old Harold Tatum Jr., of Scottsburg, were transported to Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston to be treated for injuries sustained in the wreck, according to Brandes.

The drivers of both vehicles had to be extricated.

Rescue crews from Clover, Scottsburg, Cluster Springs and Halifax volunteer fire departments, along with deputies from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene in helping remove Logan and Ann Tatum from their vehicles and with traffic control.

Both lanes of Bethel Road were closed for almost two hours following the wreck.

Brandes declared the Camry and Caravan total losses.

Charges are pending in the wreck.
