A bicyclist was airlifted to Duke University Medical Center with leg injuries and possible road rash after being struck by a motor vehicle Saturday evening on westbound James D. Hagood Highway near South Boston Speedway, according to Virginia State Police.
Virginia State Trooper G. K. Brandes identified the injured bicyclist as 27-year-old Kevin Van Tassel of South Boston.
Brandes said the accident occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the westbound lane of James D. Hagood Highway when a 2012 Chevrolet SUV operated by 66-year-old Sandra Hill of Stuart struck Van Tassel as he was riding on the right side of the road just outside of the white line.
Two other bicyclists riding with Van Tassel, including Van Tassel’s wife, Luciana, and another adult were not struck, the trooper said.
Hill told police she was temporarily blinded by the glare of the late evening sun and drifted to the right before striking Van Tassel, according to Brandes.
The other two bicyclists confirmed the glare at that time of day in that stretch of highway is intense, Brandes noted.
The trooper confirmed no one would be charged in connection with the accident.
An update on the victim’s injuries was not available at press time Sunday.
