Halifax County School Board’s April monthly meeting will occur at a new place and time.
The meeting will be held today at Clays Mill Elementary School since the normal meeting date, the second Monday of the month, falls during the school system’s spring break next week.
Like other meetings, it will begin at 6 p.m., but it will begin with a closed meeting to discuss personnel rather than the public portion of the meeting.
The board voted to move the closed portion to the beginning of their meetings during last month’s session.
The public portion will follow beginning at 7:30 p.m.
After the closed session, Superintendent Dr. Merle Herndon will recognize Assistant Superintendent Valdivia Marshall for being the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators Virginia State Leadership Award winner.
The superintendent also will recognize Meadville Elementary School for being featured in the Virginia School Board Association Showcases for Success 2014.
The school was selected to be in the directory for their school garden, thanks to teacher Kimberly Waller who wrote a grant to the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation to create it.
Students used the garden to grow vegetables without soil and kept a log of the growth of their crops.
Under new business, Marshall will bring to the board a revision to the Policy GCG Professional Staff Probationary Term and Continuing Contract.
The policy has been updated to inform teachers who have not achieved continuing contract status they must be notified of their non-renewal from April 15 to June 15.
Up for approval by the board is the 2014-15 special education annual plan to be presented by Special Education Director Jeffrey Davis.
Food Service Coordinator Lori Hale also will present the food service plan for Cluster Springs Early Learning Center.
Also slated for discussion are the following agenda items:
• VSBA February 2014 policy manual update;
• Financial report;
• Payment of bills; and
• Use of facilities.
Prior to adjourning, the school board will return to a closed meeting for personnel if needed.
