Retired executive seeks SoBo council seat

Jim Debiec has thrown his hat in the ring for the seat on South Boston Town Council formerly occupied by Connie Manning and currently occupied on an interim basis by former Councilman Morris Bryant.

Halifax County Registrar Judy Meeler confirmed Friday that Debiec had picked up a packet.

Deadline for qualifying for the November election is Tuesday.

A native of North Dakota, Debiec, a retired executive with Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, moved to South Boston 23 years ago.

He wants to give back to the community, which, in his words, has given so much to him.

“Everybody has been so nice to me and accepted my family into the community,” said Debiec. “It’s a way to give something back, and if there’s a way to make South Boston a better place to live, that’s what I’d like to do.”

Debiec currently serves as a board member on the Halifax County Service Authority.

He and wife, Kathy, have four children, Jennifer and Kathy Debiec, and Billy and Ricky Moore.

The deadline for registering to seek the South Boston Town Council seat or mayoral post is Tuesday.
