School board to reorganize tonight

Halifax County School Board members will begin the new year by reorganizing Monday at 7 p.m. in the public meeting room at the Mary Bethune office complex in Halifax.

Board members are expected to elect a chairman, vice-chairman, appoint a clerk, deputy clerk and a designee to attend school board meetings in the absence of the superintendent.

Board members are expected to discuss proposed school board meeting dates/time and adopt Robert’s Rules as rules of order.

In other business Monday, South Boston Elementary School Principal Sue Bagbey is expected to give a presentation on the school.

Superintendent Dr. Merle Herndon is expected to present a policy revision on reduction in professional staff work force, and Division Testing Coordinator Nancy Zirkle is expected to present guidelines and procedures for out-of-zone students for 2013-2014.

Under new business, board members will appoint members to serve on a finance committee, and Director of Operations and Maintenance Larry Roller is expected to go over the school system’s capital improvements plan.

Director of Finance Jay Camp is expected to give the financial report and seek payment of the bills.

Prior to adjourning, board members are expected to go into closed session to discuss student discipline.
