Superintendent search, efficiency study topics of school board meetings

Halifax County School Board members will hold a special closed meeting today with representatives of the Virginia School Board Association to discuss the search for a new superintendent to replace Superintendent Paul Stapleton who will leave at the end of June.

Board members have received 24 applications and are holding the special closed meeting to narrow the search for individuals they hope to interview.

Then on Thursday, school trustees will hold their regular monthly meeting when they are expected to hear a report on the long-awaited efficiency review of the schools from Tatia Prieto of Prismatic Services.

The school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the public meeting room at the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax.

The meeting is scheduled a week earlier than usual due to the schools being on spring break Friday and all of next week.

The school board meeting comes a week after members adopted a $57.1 million budget that includes $34,181,227 in state funding and $12,906,000 in county funding.

According to Chief Financial Officer Bill Covington, the budget may have to be adjusted once the General Assembly adopts a budget.

In other business slated for discussion Thursday night, Executive Director for Administration Valdivia Marshall is expected to recognize Melody Parnell for receiving national board certification.

According to Marshall, Parnell is the second candidate to receive this advanced and rigorous certification.

Under new business, Executive Director of Instruction Dr. Melanie Stanley is expected to get approval for the 2012-13 career and technical plan.

Old Dominion University Executive Director for the Center of Educational Partnerships Dr. John Nunnery and Paul Miller of Success for All Foundation are expected to make a federal grant announcement.

Covington is expected to give the financial report and ask for payment of bills.

Prior to adjourning, the board is expected to go into closed session to discuss personnel, property and contracts.
