Planners to discuss suspension of VFW veterans’ sweepstakes

The Halifax Planning Commission will perform a zoning review of VFW Post #8243’s “Support A Veteran Sweepstakes” when it meets tonight at 7 p.m. in the Halifax Town Hall.

The sweepstakes operations have been suspended at the VFW Post located on L. P. Bailey Highway in Halifax, and planners are expected to discuss the matter further tonight.

The status of the Par 5 Development Dollar General Store to be constructed at the intersection of U.S. 501 and Scenic Byway 360 also is slated for discussion tonight.

Last year council approved the commission’s recommendation to approve a rezoning request to rezone the property from residential to commercial so a Dollar General Store can be built on the site.

In February Town Manger Carl Espy confirmed that preliminary plans for the store had been submitted.

Other topics slated for discussion at tonight meeting include:

An update on the Banister River Gateway Project and Virginia Department of Transportation enhancement grant funding status

Updates on the Halifax Downtown revitalization and Halifax Telecommunications projects

Planning Commission members’ terms of office
