Man sentenced for carnal knowledge

A 19-year-old Halifax man, Onzai Sharocki Logan, was sentenced Thursday in Halifax County Circuit Court to three years in prison, with all but seven months suspended, for having carnal knowledge of a child 13 years of age or older, but younger than 15 years of age.

The court ordered work release for the defendant and ordered the suspended portion of Logan’s sentence be conditioned on his good behavior for five years.

The court further ordered Logan to register as a sex offender and have no contact with his victim.

Other court cases

Shanon Gerard Rutledge, 20, of South Boston had the court take under advisement two charges against him for using a communication system to solicit a minor during a sentencing hearing on Thursday.

Judge David Melesco ordered the defendant to undergo mandatory sex offender treatment and serve weekends in jail until further order of the court.

Rutledge entered an Alford plea to the charges in a May trial.

Under terms of an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but realizes prosecution evidence would make a guilty finding at trial almost a certainty.

As part of the Alford plea agreement, the commonwealth agreed to nol pros two charges against Rutledge for taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Santonio Dwight Woods, 30, of Halifax was convicted Thursday of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Sentencing for Woods was continued to a date in the November court term.
