After traffic stop, man runs from authorities

Halifax County authorities continue to search for a 28-year-old Mt. Carmel man who fled when police were attempting to arrest him on outstanding warrants.

According to Sheriff Fred Clark, Jerry Wayne Conner is wanted on a probation violation and escaping without force.

Yancey conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle occupied by four subjects Tuesday on Mt. Carmel Road.

After stopping the vehicle, Yancey identified Conner as one of the passengers and advised him he was under arrest, Clark said.

Conner fled the scene, and tracking dogs were called to the location where they tracked Conner for a couple of hours but were unsuccessful in locating the suspect.

Conner is known to reside in the Mt. Carmel area and in Person County, North Carolina, according to the sheriff.

Anyone who has information on Conner’s whereabouts are asked to call Halifax County Communications at 434-476-3334 or the Crime Line at 434-476-8445.

Virginia State Police and Halifax County Animal Control assisted deputies in the search Tuesday, Clark said expressing his appreciation for their help.
