For the second time in as many months, thieves have struck a county store knocking out the front doors and stealing an ATM containing an undisclosed amount of money.
This time the culprits struck Country Express store in the northern portion of the county, according to Lt. Steve M. Cassada of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Department.
Sometime after midnight Monday and before the store opened Tuesday morning, someone pulled the electric meter from its mount at the Country Express store on L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway in Volens.
After successfully disabling the electricity to the store, the culprits then used a vehicle to break open the doors to the store, Cassada said.
Once inside, they apparently used a chain to pull the ATM from the store and then stole it.
The amount of cash in the machine has not yet been determined, Cassada said.
Sheriff's Office Investigators Mike Womack and Jeff Burton are handling this break-in and larceny.
Late last month two or more thieves backed a pickup truck through the front entrance of Gene’s Orange Market just west of Riverdale in South Boston and helped themselves to the ATM inside the store.
Cassada said authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between Tuesday night’s crime and the other ATM theft at Gene's Orange Market in South Boston.
