Police chase ends as vehicle crashes into tree

A 39-year-old Danville man faces multiple charges following a state police chase that resulted in Elvin Robertson III crashing his vehicle into a tree in Scottsburg.

According to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corrine Geller, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday, Virginia State Police Senior Trooper P. W. Leath attempted to stop a vehicle at the intersection of Highway 360 and Highway 58 for having an illegal window tint.

However, when Leath activated his lights and siren, the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated, Geller said.

The suspect vehicle continued eastbound on Highway 360, then proceeded through the town of Scottsburg before coming to a stop on State Route 720/Green Level Road in Halifax County when the suspect vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

Following the wreck, the driver then tried to flee on foot, Geller said.

When Leath caught up with the suspect, he initially resisted arrest but was finally taken into custody.

Robertson was charged with illegal window tint, driving on a revoked license, (felony) eluding police, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest, Geller said.

Robertson currently is being held without bond at the Halifax County Adult Detention Center.
