Two or more thieves backed a pickup truck through the front entrance of Gene’s Orange Market shortly after 2:30 Tuesday morning and helped themselves to the ATM located in the front of the store.
According to Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark, the dispatch center was notified at 2:39 a.m. an alarm was going off at Gene’s Orange Market located on Highway 58 (Philpott Road) just west of Riverdale in South Boston.
Owner Gene Morris and deputies arrived on the scene within a few minutes of the alarm sounding, Clark said, to find brazen thieves had backed a pick up truck through the front doors of the store, stolen the ATM machine and fled the scene.
“It tore it up,” Clark said describing damage to the front of the convenience store.
A store video captured the entire event, and deputies spent Tuesday morning at the store gathering evidence and reviewing the video of the truck backing into the store.
“It had to have been at least two,” Clark said, adding currently authorities have no suspects but continue to follow up on leads.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken in the ATM, the sheriff said.
Investigators Tommy R. Spencer and Mike A. Womack are in charge of the investigation.
