Rash of burglaries plague Town of Halifax

Sometime in the early morning hours of Thursday, a rash of burglaries and attempted burglary took place at five businesses in downtown Halifax with a sixth attempt being unsuccessful.

According to Acting Halifax Police Chief David D. Irby, an initial investigation indicated the thief or thieves burglarized The Packhouse, The Law Offices of John Greenbacker, George Bagwell, W. Bryant Claiborne and David Guthrie, and a break in at K&D Floor Covering was unsuccessful.

Entry was gained at most locations through either jimmying or kicking the rear door in, Irby said.

Halifax Police Department and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office personnel spent Thursday gathering evidence and information regarding items reported missing or damaged.

Reported missing from the businesses was an undisclosed amount of cash and a wireless Internet card from The Packhouse; an undisclosed amount of cash and a handgun from George Bagwell’s law office and two laptop computers from John Greenbacker’s law office.

If anyone has any information regarding these break-ins, they are asked to call the Town of Halifax Police Department at 476-2526 or the Halifax County Crime Line at 476-8445.

A reward will be offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved, Irby said.
