Seven additional indictments handed down in murder case

A Halifax County Circuit Court grand jury handed down seven additional indictments Monday against 41-year-old Halifax resident James Lloyd Terry, previously indicted for the capital murder and rape of 84-year-old Charlotte Osborne Rice in April 2011.

The grand jury indicted Terry for two counts of the capital murder of Rice during rape, one count of the capital murder of Rice during a robbery, two counts of object sexual penetration by force, one count of breaking and entering the residence of Rice with the intent to commit robbery, and one count of the robbery of Rice.

Terry now has been indicted for nine offenses related to the death of Rice, which occurred April 14, 2011 at her home on North Main Street in South Boston.

Terry was initially arrested and charged after the body of Rice was discovered in her North Main Street home when authorities responded to a report of a possible breaking and entering.

Acting on a 911 call to police from neighbor Joe Taylor, police arrived at the North Main Street residence where they apprehended Terry following a foot pursuit through yards neighboring Rice’s house.

Terry, a registered sex offender, has been held without bond since the time of his arrest.

No trial date has been set, and Terry could face the death penalty if convicted.
