South Boston man enters Alford plea in assault case

A 26-year-old South Boston man, Gabriel Brandon Brewer, entered Alford pleas Tuesday in Halifax County Circuit Court to a pair of misdemeanors after reaching a plea agreement with the commonwealth.

Under terms of an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt but realizes prosecution evidence would almost certainly result in a guilty finding if the case went to trial.

Brewer entered Alford pleas to misdemeanor assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, with the court sentencing the defendant to a pair of 12-month suspended jail terms.

The court ordered the suspended jail time conditioned on Brewer’s good behavior for 60 months, and it ordered the defendant to have no contact with his victim or his victim’s younger sister without their parents’ approval.
