Vernon Hill man pleads guilty to drug charge

A 29-year-old Vernon Hill man, Tyler Avery Chavis, pleaded guilty Thursday in Halifax County Circuit Court to a single charge for a second or subsequent offense of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Pursuant to a plea agreement with the commonwealth, the court sentenced Chavis to 10 years in prison for the drug charge, with all but two years and six months suspended, conditioned on Chavis’ good behavior for 10 years.

The court ordered Chavis placed on probation for one year following his release, and it ordered the defendant to pay  $175 restitution to Virginia State Police.

The court additionally suspended Chavis’ operator’s license for six months.

In another court case heard Thursday, Daniel Wayne Arnold, 24, of Roxboro, N.C., pleaded guilty to a probation violation.

The court revoked eight months of Arnold’s previously suspended jail sentence for the violation, and it extended the defendant’s probationary period one year.
