Gretna man killed in stabbing; county deputies respond

James Thomas Santangelo II has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Charles L. Ooten after he turned himself in to Halifax County authorities.

Ooten died from a stab wound he sustained Saturday, according to a news release from Lt. Suzanne D. Holland of the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities found Ooten dead at the scene, 289 Iona Road, Gretna, located off Route 40 in Pittsylvania County, just across the Halifax County line, Holland said.

At approximately 10:23 a.m. Saturday, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 289 Iona Road in Gretna.  Upon their arrival, they found the victim had been stabbed and died at the scene.

The suspect has been taken into custody, and an investigation is still ongoing at this time, Holland said in the release.

Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Major Steve Cassada confirmed Sunday that Halifax County authorities also responded to the scene of the stabbing since it was just over the county line.
