Police: Great Dane bites 8 year old in South Boston

Halifax County Animal Control Officer Leroy King investigated the report of a Great Dane biting an 8-year-old boy Sunday morning on Chestnut Street in South Boston.

According to King, the young boy was riding his bike on Chestnut Street when the dog came out of the yard and bit him on his right calf.

King said the juvenile sustained a “slight bite puncture wound” as a result of the dog bite.

Gary Franklin New, who said he was keeping the dog overnight for his daughter who was in Danville, said he had tied up and muzzled the dog.

However, New told King the dog must have gotten loose and slipped off the muzzle.

The juvenile said he didn’t see where the dog had been tied up, King said.

Following the Sunday morning incident, King said the dog will be confined for 10 days since New had no tags and no paper work to prove the dog has received rabies vaccination.

New was issued a citation for not having vaccination or tags for the dog.

New told King his daughter had all the paper work on the dog, and King said New will be required to appear in court and present proof of vaccination and tags.

If he can not present proof, he will be charged and fined, King said.
