Clover man charged with filing false police report

A Clover man is in a Danville jail charged with making a false police report and grand larceny.

At 2:46 p.m. Tuesday, a 39-year-old delivery driver for Blue Ridge Beverage of South Boston, Steven Maurise Winston, reported he had been robbed, according to a news release from the Danville Police Department.

“He reported that he was stopped in a delivery truck near the intersection of Industrial Avenue and Jefferson Street when a black male wearing a mask and glasses approached him, displayed a handgun, and got into the truck,” the release stated. “After surrendering over $1,200 in cash, he reported that the suspect fled on foot in the area of Industrial Avenue and Holbrook Avenue.”

After police investigated the incident, they found the suspect had made a false report and “took the aforementioned cash himself,” according to the release. The cash was later recovered.

Winston was charged with filing a false police report and grand larceny, according to police.

He was arrested and is being held in the Danville City Jail under a $1,500 secured bond.
