South Boston man pleads to firearms violation

A 50-year-old South Boston man, John Rudolph Hamlett pleaded guilty Thursday in Halifax County Circuit Court to possession of a firearm as a non-violent felon.

Pursuant to a plea agreement with the commonwealth, the court sentenced Hamlett to five years in prison, with all time suspended to that already served, conditioned on his good behavior for five years.

The court ordered Hamlett placed on probation for one year, ordered him to pay a $1,000 fine and suspended his operator’s license for six months.

Other court cases

Thanh Ngoc Tran, 28, of Crystal River, Florida was convicted Thursday of a first offense of DWI (blood level, .20 or greater) in a misdemeanor appeal case.

The court sentenced the defendant to 12 months in jail, with all but 10 days suspended, ordered him to pay $50 to the Trauma Fund and ordered him to complete VASAP and 50 hours of community service.

The court additionally suspended the defendant’s operator’s license for 12 months.

 Sara Courtney Hereford, 26, of Crystal Hill had a charge against her for contempt of court dismissed Thursday.

The commonwealth moved to nol pros another charge against Hereford on Thursday, one for driving on a suspended operator’s license, in a misdemeanor appeal case.
