Arrests mount in drug sweep

Eight more individuals have been arrested on drug charges as part of a “roundup” in the county that got underway Tuesday when the Halifax/South Boston Regional Narcotics and Gang Task Force arrested 33 individuals.

According to Virginia State Police Special Agent R. B. George, coordinator of the Task Force, eight others are still wanted on outstanding charges.

The task force’s efforts were the result of ongoing investigations that have been taking place over the past year, George said. 

A total of 49 individuals have been indicted with most of these subjects being targets of controlled narcotic purchases the task force conducted throughout the county, he added.

The latest drug arrests include the following:

Toni Saunders of Copley Springs Road, South Boston charged with one count of distributing a Schedule II drug;

 Alisha Wright of Mattox Street, Brookneal charged with one count of distributing a Schedule II drug;

 John Jacque Claiborn of Huell Matthews Hwy., Alton, charged with one misdemeanor count of distributing marijuana;

 David Reeves of Mt. Carmel Road, Alton charged with two counts of distributing cocaine and one count of distributing a Schedule II drug;

 Crystal King of Charlotte, North Carolina, charged with one count of distributing cocaine and one count of conspiring to distribute cocaine;

 Beverly Miller of Golden Leaf Road, Nathalie charged with five counts of distributing cocaine and two counts of conspiring to distribute cocaine;

 Howard Vass of Spring Avenue, South Boston charged with four counts of distributing cocaine, one count of conspiring to distribute cocaine and one misdemeanor count of distributing marijuana; and

 Steven “Billy” Vaughan of Hackberry Road, Sutherlin charged with one count of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine.

The 49 individuals are charged with 81 counts of distributing controlled substances, 24 counts of conspiring to distribute controlled substances, 16 counts of marijuana distribution, two counts of conspiring to distribute marijuana, one count of manufacturing marijuana, one count of possession of marijuana, four counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, one count of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, one count of felonious possession of a sawed off shotgun, one count of possession of a firearm while distributing a controlled substance, four felony counts of child endangerment and one count of possession of a controlled substance. 

The round-up operation was conducted by numerous law agencies including the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, South Boston Police Department, Halifax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Town of Halifax Police Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia ABC, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and the ATF.
