Governor’s School back on agenda for school board

Halifax County School Board members will meet tonight at 6 p.m. at the Mary Bethune office complex in Halifax and are expected to discuss the unfinished business of Governor’s School.

Superintendent Dr. Merle Herndon is expected to present board members with more information on the Regional Governor’s School in Keysville as well as its costs.

In other business tonight, board members will hear a report from Herndon about the Virginia State University initiative, and Director of Operations and Maintenance Larry Roller is expected to give the energy consumption report.

Cluster Springs Elementary Principal Lisa Long is expected to give a presentation to board members about the school.

Under new business, Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders is expected to seek approval from board members for a memorandum of understanding to use the Halifax County Middle School as a primary community shelter when necessary. 

Herndon is expected to seek approval for smoke-free school buildings and proposed revisions to policy regarding insurance. 

Director of Secondary Education/Accountability Frosty Owens is expected to seek approval of the calendar for the upcoming school year. 

Roller is expected to seek approval to go forward with STEM HVAC replacement bids.

Prior to adjourning, board members are slated to go into closed session to discuss personnel and property.
