The search for county resident Hattie Gertrude Brown continued yesterday as the Virginia State Police Dive Team searched the Hyco River on Lowery Road for the 48-year-old Halifax County woman who was last seen in the early morning hours on Saturday, May 16.
According to Special Agent Troy LaRue of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office, scuba operations took place Tuesday on State Routes 602 and 741, North Fork Church Road and Lowery Road.
“We are checking areas near bridges,” he said, explaining an earlier search had been slated for Wednesday, Nov. 4, but due to high waters, the operation had to be rescheduled until yesterday.
LaRue said authorities are “following additional leads” and “spot checking locations” in hopes of finding the missing woman.
“We encourage all hunters to be on the look out for any type of clothing in the woods of the Virgilina community,” he added.
“Specifically, they should be looking for a sleeveless top and striped pants, or anything that looks strange to them,” LaRue said. “They can give us a call at 1-800-552-0962 or call the Halifax Communications Center at 434-476-3334, the Halifax State Police Office 434-476-1887, or the sheriff’s office at 434-476-3339.
Brown and her 2003 Volkswagen Jetta were last seen in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 16, at the Sheetz station at the intersection of Highways 501 and 58 in the Riverdale area just outside of South Boston.
A video camera captured Brown and her car at the gas station at approximately 2:33 a.m. Investigators have determined that she was accompanied at the gas station by her nephew.
Investigators said Brown left her home without her purse or critical medication, and family members have offered a $2,500 reward for her safe return.
Her car was found two months later when a farmer cutting hay discovered the charred remains of the Volkswagen Jetta on farmland near Virgilina.
The farmer was working on property in the southeastern corner of Halifax County July 8 when he came upon an abandoned vehicle behind an old barn. The vehicle had been completely destroyed by fire.
Brown is a black female with brown eyes and black shoulder-length hair, approximately 5’4”, and 155 pounds. She was last seen wearing a sleeveless top and pants with side stripes.
