Petition Seeks To Reinstate Manager

A petition seeking reinstatement of South Boston Library Manager Woodson Hughes will be presented to library trustees tomorrow in Halifax.

The board will meet at 4:30 p.m. in the Halifax Public Library, and the meeting is open to the public.

The petition being circulated in support of Hughes, opens: “We the undersigned citizens of the Town of South Boston and Halifax County would like to see Woodson Hughes reinstated as the manager of the South Boston Library.”

The petition may be signed Monday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at attorney J.W. Greer’s office located at the corner of Wilborn Ave. and North Main in South Boston.  Greer’s office address is 500 N. Main.

“Woodson has given 25 years of his life to that library, and he is so near retirement, this is just a travesty,” said Norma Eggleston. “He is just the kindest, best-hearted man anywhere.”

Hughes’ resignation earlier this month ignited controversy in the community, with former Friends of the Library President Ron Miller charging: “If it was a resignation, it was a forced one.” Miller immediately resigned as president of the Friends of the Library in protest.

Library Director Rhonda Griffin, while confirming Hughes’ resignation, said the resignation was a personnel issue and that she could not comment.
Three of the library trustees’ 11-member board were absent the evening of the called meeting.

“I know there is going to be a group of concerned citizens there, and we are on the agenda for one of our group to speak,” Anne Raab said.

Speaking as a concerned citizen, Raab has questioned whether the absent trustees were aware of the issues to be discussed.

Hughes’ career with the library system has covered approximately 25 years.

The library board is composed of 11 members, with eight appointed by county supervisors and three appointed by South Boston Town Council.

Current trustees include board chairman Lisa Crews, Meredith Bowman, Dr. Charles Parker, Jewel Giles, Mickey Thomas, Heidi Dawson, Joan Hines, Valdivia Marshall, Tommy Reagan, Barbara Speece and Shirley McCaleb.
