Virginia Cooperative Extension will be hosting an Introduction to Meat Goat Production Program.
This program is designed for beginning meat goat producers, persons interesting in possibly starting a herd, or individuals simply wishing to learn more about meat goats. The educational program will be composed of a series of five meetings regarding different aspects of the meat goat industry. The meetings will be held at the Halifax Agricultural Marketing Center, 1001 Farmway Lane Scottsburg, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on each of the evenings.
• OCT. 13: Demand/Facilities/Forage Management
Speakers: Grace A. Hite, Halifax VCE and Jamie Stowe, Pittsylvania VCE
Guest speaker: Dr. Chris Teutsch, VT forage extension specialist
• OCT. 27: Parasites/FAMACHA
Guest Speaker: Dr. Joe Tritschler, VSU meat goat extension specialist
(Participants will receive FAMACHA certification. FAMACHA Anemia Guides can be purchased for $10.)
• NOV. 10: General Herd Health Update
Guest Speaker: Dr. Jon Collins, Halifax County veterinarian
• NOV. 17: Marketing/Grading
Guest Speakers: Linda Faye Wallace, Halifax agricultural marketing director, Mike Carpenter, VDACS Division of Livestock Marketing, and Bill Crews, Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association president
• NOV. 24: Producer Panel
Guest Speakers: Ned Strange, Will Roberts, Bonnie Brown, Greg Wade and Shannon Ringo
