An afternoon fire caused an estimated $17,000 damage to a South Boston home Wednesday, according to a South Boston Fire Department spokesman.
A neighbor called at 4:41 p.m. to report the fire at 213 Leigh Street, and the South Boston Fire Department responded with four trucks and 12 firefighters, the spokesman said.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they saw smoke coming from the eaves of the single-story wood frame house. When they entered the house they found fire in a front bedroom, the spokesman said.
Homeowner Joseph Traynham, who was inside the house when the fire started, was initially treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and then transported to Halifax Regional Hospital by EMS personnel. A hospital spokesperson said Traynham was treated and released.
South Boston Fire Department personnel were on the scene for about an hour, returning to the fire station at 5:42 p.m. The cause of the fire has not been determined, the fire department spokesman said.
