Fire damages Nathalie home

A Monday afternoon fire caused heavy damage to a one-story frame home at 2194 Leda Road in Nathalie, according to North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ronnie Waller.The homeowner, Lillie Tucker, discovered the blaze on her return home, but she was not injured as a result of the fire, Waller said.

A total of 20 firefighters and four vehicles from North Halifax, six firefighters and three trucks from Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, four men and two trucks from Riceville-Java Volunteer Fire Department and four men and one vehicle from Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, in addition to four firefighters from Liberty Volunteer Fire Department and one from Brookneal were called to the scene at 1:13 p.m.

Firefighters remained on the scene for three and one-half hours, the chief said.

The fire appeared to have started in the basement where most of the blaze was contained, according to Waller.

Waller estimated $60,000 damage to the house, primarily from extensive heat and smoke damage.
