Halifax County logging accident injures man

A man in his middle 30s was severely injured Monday afternoon shortly before 2 p.m. in a logging accident that occurred on Fox Lane, off Meadville Road in northern Halifax County.

Sheriff’s office officials on Tuesday identified the injured logger as Bevin Derstine of Ponderosa Road, South Boston.

Derstine suffered an open cut to the head while using a chain saw, according to North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department Captain Kenny Wynn.

A Halifax County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said Derstine suffered a 3-inch gash to the top of his head and scalp.

Approximately a dozen North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department volunteers responded to the accident and were assisted by volunteers from Liberty Volunteer Fire Department.

The injured logger was transported to the helipad in South Boston where the UNC “Tarheel” helicopter transported him to Duke Medical Center.

At press time Tuesday, Derstine was listed in critical condition.
