A 58-year-old Stuart man is listed in critical condition at Duke University Medical Center after being hit by a vehicle in South Boston on Saturday evening.
Larry Rucker was struck by an oncoming car when he attempted to exit a stopped vehicle and stepped into oncoming traffic in the 1000 block of Old Cluster Springs Road shortly after 7 p.m., according to investigating State Trooper A. D. Dishman.
“He apparently had been trying to get out of the vehicle while it was moving, so the driver pulled over,” Dishman said.
As Rucker stepped out of the vehicle, he was struck by a 1999 Buick driven by Curtis Puryear of Old Cluster Springs Road, South Boston.
The impact broke a side mirror and dented the door of Puryear’s Buick, the investigating officer said.
Puryear immediately notified authorities he had struck the man, Dishman added.
However, the trooper said events at the scene began to escalate as Rucker’s family members, who were also in the car, reportedly began to threaten Puryear.
Puryear told authorities he was leaving the scene to go to his house located in sight of where Rucker was struck, Dishman said.
When authorities arrived on the scene, Puryear returned, the trooper added.
Rucker, who reportedly had been drinking, was initially transported to Halifax Regional Hospital before being airlifted to Duke University Medical Center.
No charges were filed against Puryear, Dishman said.
South Boston Police assisted Halifax County deputies in directing traffic at the scene of the accident Saturday night.
