A 17-year-old Scottsburg juvenile and her mother escaped serious injury in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon, according to state police.
Trooper P. W. Leath reported the teen and her mother, 48-year-old Cynthia A. Overby, were injured when the 2010 Honda Civic the girl was driving ran under the trailer portion of a 2011 Peterbilt tractor-trailer owned by Walmart Transportation LLC and driven by 57-year-old Robert A. Michaud of Halifax.
The trooper said the Civic was traveling west on U.S. Route 360, and the tractor-trailer was stopped at the stop sign on Route 716 waiting for traffic to clear in order to make a left turn onto Highway 360. The teen thought the tractor-trailer was going to pull out in front of her, and she attempted to turn down Route 716, lost control, and the car slid underneath the trailer, Leath said.
EMS personnel transported the juvenile and Overby to Halifax Regional Hospital where they were treated for their injuries and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The crash occurred at 1:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Trooper Leath estimated damages at $12,000 to the Civic and $1,000 to the tractor-trailer. He charged the teen with reckless driving-failure to maintain proper control of a motor vehicle.
