Crash kills South Boston man

A 28-year-old South Boston man was pronounced dead at the scene following a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning, state police said.

Trooper D. J. Cline reported Clarence G. Conner Jr. was killed when the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving ran off the right side of the road. Conner lost control, and the SUV ran off the left side of the road and overturned three times ejecting him from the vehicle. The trooper said Conner was not wearing a seatbelt, and he estimated the vehicle’s speed at 80 mph.

The crash occurred at 12:44 a.m. Thursday on Route 607, two-tenths of a mile north of U.S. 360.

Trooper Cline estimated damage to the Grand Cherokee at $7,000.

Conner becomes Halifax County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2011. A total of four individuals died on county roads in 2010.
