Verizon cellphone users were back in business Thursday at noon after a period of on-again-off-again service that began around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Area business owners who depend solely on cellphones to conduct their business along with local residents, many of whom have given up landline service, lodged complaints.
Some visited the Verizon store in Centerville to speak with local employees about the problem on Thursday morning.
People throughout Virginia and North Carolina experienced cellphone outages beginning Wednesday night, according to a Verizon Wireless representative.
Multiple cell tower outages were reported across the area, with the Halifax County area reporting a 70 percent failure rate for cell phone calls, a Verizon customer service representative said.
When contacted Thursday morning, the Verizon representative said the Network Repair Bureau was aware of the problem and was working to repair the network.
“Verizon Wireless service was fully restored at noontime today,” according to Melaine Ortel, spokesperson for Verizon Wireless.
