Man airlifted after accident cutting wood

A county resident was severely injured while cutting wood in the Virgilina community Wednesday afternoon, according to Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders. The man was cutting a tree with a chainsaw when a limb fell striking him in the head and knocking him unconscious, Saunders said.

“The man’s son witnessed the accident and called 911 about 1:45 p.m.,” said Saunders. “The first report was that the man had been cut by the saw, but that was incorrect,” Saunders added.

“When the EMTs arrived the victim was awake but disoriented,” Saunders said. “They (EMTs) decided to have him airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital.”

Saunders said the EMTs transported the man to the former Virgilina Elementary School grounds where they met the helicopter.

The emergency services coordinator explained he could not release the victim’s name because of the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) law.

Saunders also said the man’s condition was not available.
