South Boston police officer earns corporal promotion

South Boston Police Senior Patrol Officer Julianna C. Berry has been promoted to the rank of corporal, according to Chief James W. Binner. The police department held a promotion ceremony for Berry on Jan. 30, during which Chief Binner said Berry was eligible for promotion to corporal because of her successful completion of department policy regulations regarding advancement and upon the recommendation of her superior officer.

Berry has been with the South Boston Police Department since 2006 and was assigned as senior patrol officer in the patrol division, Binner said.

Cpl. Berry’s training includes classes in such courses as Refresher Drug Recognition, Operation Kids Child Safety Seat, Patrol Drug Interdiction, Sexx Crimes, McGruff Club Training, Hostage Negotiation School, General Instructor Certification, Safety Net Commonwealth of Virginia Training, Breath Alcohol Operator and Death and Homicide Investigations.

Berry’s training also includes courses in New Investigator Training, Detective and New Criminal Investigator, First Line Supervisor for Law Enforcement, Child Sexual Abuse, Child Abuse Investigation and Missing Child Investigation for Patrol Officers (Amber Alert).

Berry also is a certified general instructor at Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy, and she holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from the University of Phoenix, Binner said.

“Corporal Berry has been assigned as an assistant shift leader in the department’s patrol division,” the chief said.

Berry is married to Frank Berry, and they have three children.
