Dog killed in Tuesday afternoon blaze

An early afternoon fire Tuesday destroyed a home in the Cluster Springs community, according to Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Chris Hudson.

The home, a double-wide, single story structure, was owned by Shirley Loftis, said Hudson, who added the first fire fighting units arrived shortly after 12:30 p.m.

As of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, crews remained at the scene.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but a dog perished in the blaze, Hudson said.

The Cluster Springs VFD, South Boston Fire Department and Turbeville VFD each responded with two trucks and personnel to fight the fire, and Virgilina VFD along with Ceffo and Woodsdale VFDs from North Carolina responded with a truck each, according to Hudson, who estimated 20-25 firefighters fought the blaze.

One lane of Cluster Springs Road was closed to traffic while crews fought the fire, with the home declared a total loss, Hudson said.

The cause of the fire was undetermined as of press time, the spokesman added.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
