South Boston woman charged in wreck

A 49-year-old South Boston woman was charged with following too close after a two-vehicle wreck that occurred Friday morning on U.S. 58 at the intersection of State Route 857.

Janice T. Spencer was not injured when the 2000 Ford SUV she was driving ran into the rear of a 2001 Chrysler van driven by 51-year-old Wayne L. Hughes of Semora, N.C., according to a state police report filed by investigating State Trooper K. R. Martin.

Hughes was injured and transported to Halifax Regional Hospital.

The accident report indicated Hughes was stopped for traffic in the westbound lane of Philpott Road at 7:50 a.m. when Spencer struck the Chrysler in the rear.

Damage to Spencer’s Ford SUV was estimated at $2,500, and damage to Hughes’ Chrysler was listed at $2,500, the report stated.
