Driver identified in deadly Halifax County crash

A 60-year-old Martinsville man was killed in wreck Wednesday morning when a logging truck overturned and spilled its load on Chatham Road in Halifax County. Two vehicles were involved in the fatal wreck, according to Virginia State Police. The driver of the logging truck, Carroll W. White, was pronounced dead on scene, said Virginia State Trooper K.R. Martin.

The truck was identified belonging to Triple “S” Trucking Inc. in Ringgold.

The wreck happened at about 9:45 a.m. near the Sandy Creek area of Chatham Road. The other vehicle involved, a Chevrolet box truck, sustained front-end damage. The driver of the Chevrolet, James D. Johnson, 56, of Gretna, was not injured, according to state police.

Debris from the accident scene made more than 200 yards of Chatham Road impassable for much of the day. Deputies from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation worked to detour traffic in the area. The road was reopened at 3:15 p.m.

About 15 emergency personnel from Liberty and North Halifax Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the call.

The investigation into the cause of the wreck is ongoing. No charges have been filed.
