Reliving the dream

Halifax County Business and Professional Council officers and members who sponsored Sunday’s Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday celebration at First Baptist Church on Ferry Street are President Linda Owen, First Vice-President Leon Johnson, Second Vice-President Valdivia Marshall, Secretary Mashonda Richardson, Assistant Secretary Nakisha Easley, Treasurer Stanley Jeffress, Assistant Treasurer Helen Leigh, Parliamentarian Lealand Luck, Chaplain the Rev. Kevin Chandler, and members Gara Chandler, William Coleman, Mattie Cowan, Detrick Easley, Cheryle Ferguson, Derwin Leigh, Sharon Medley, Jermaine Richardson and Brenda Tune-Fuller.  Not pictured are Stanley Brandon, Marcus Hargrave and Stacey Hargrave.  Guest preacher for the celebration was the Rev. William J. Coleman, accompanied by the Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church Choir.

Nettie Simon-Owens, Rhonda Reaves and Gatha Richardson were recognized for their community service to others and for their leadership yesterday during the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration sponsored by the Halifax County Business and Professional Council (HCBPC).  Simon-Owens is director of Workforce Operations and Services for the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, Reaves served as executive director for the Halifax County Cancer Association for 15 years, and Richardson is the co-founder of the Mentor-Role Model Program in Halifax County.  Pictured, front row, are Lisa Wallace, accepting for Reaves; Nettie Simon-Owen; and Leon Johnson, accepting for Gatha Richardson.  Back row, from left, are Linda Owen, president, and Valdivia Marshall, second vice-president of the HCBPC.
